Out of Norm Travels - Alaska adventure in 2014

Started on this entry whilst traveling on the Alaska Airlines plane flying away from Fairbanks on my return leg after spending 5 nights at Bettles Lodge, near the Arctic Circle. 

Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine that I will be adding Arctic Circle to my "have been" places! To think photography was the reason for me spending several nights out in the bitter cold with temperatures that felt like -14 degrees at times. Bettles coldest is -60 I think - there is a sign somewhere. Having my fingers and toes frozen stiff from braving the bitter howling winds and low temperature (alien to someone who lives in the tropics) in the hope of catch lights in my cameras. 

It certainly has been a truly amazing and wonderful experience to have bundled myself to shoot the auroras. The trip has been nothing short of spectacular with sighting of the auroras 4 out of the 5 nights spent at the Bettles Lodge, which sits just next to the airfield. 

After spending the 1st night waiting for the cloud cover to blow over, I was bracing myself for a possibly nil (*yikes*) sighting trip as it was not unheard of to have not seen a single aurora even after spending 1 week at a particular location. But I kept my fingers crossed as this is after all one of the most likely places in the world to see the auroras. 

Thankfully the heavens cleared up from the 2nd night onwards and I was treated to one of natures amazing phenomenons from that time onwards for the rest of my trips.  The first time I saw the lights was  unforgettable with the enormous "Wow" factor. I am truly thankful to have this chance to bear witness to nature's most amazing light display. The lights were on from the early part of the night from the twilight hours with the light showing off at various times throughout the night. 

The last night was exceptionally clear so had a fun time chasing for the auroras over the vast space around Bettles with a like-minded aurora chasing fellow photographer.  I had taken at least 1000+ photos every night but am sharing my 6 personal favorites (there are just so many!).

This is a tick of my "to-do" list - Climb the Great Wall of China. There was never a doubt in my mind that I will do this climb & I was fortunate enough to do it again before I turn half century old.  Unlike my recollection of my first trip up along the Great Wall where I had little time to explore the Great Wall, this trip was arranged specially to ensure that I got to travel from one end of the Wall to another. Out of Norm Travels - Iceland The Land of Contrasts

As I wrote this, I had already finished my last bits of  Skyr, Iceland's famous low fat yogurt  and with that last bit, all my lovely memories from a land I had visited in early February 2016 started flooding back.  This land is located some 12,680 km/7,878 miles away from home and took me some 16+ hours over 2 airlines before I finally landed on  Keflavik   International Airport ,  Iceland's international airport located in   Reykjavik, which is also Iceland’s capital. Reaching Iceland has been nothing short of a dream with my travel into extreme cold where "normal" means 0 degrees or less. Out of Norm Travels -2010 - Bhutan 11-20 June 2010- Day 1

Reminiscing of my 1st Photo trip with my DSLR - Bhutan, the Land of the Dragons aka Happiest Place in the World.  I woke up at 3a.m. in Bangkok for a 3.50a.m. checkin for the 5.50a.m. flight using Bhutan ’s national carrier, “ Druk Air ”, the only flight that travels from Bangkok to the only airport in Bhutan that is in the area of Paro. We touched down in Paro at 750a.m. Bhutan is 1 hour behind Bangkok i.e. 2 hours behind Singapore .   The touchdown was fairly exciting as the plane had to navigate through a maze of the mountains and valleys and flight path was almost in a zigzag manner. I managed to get exciting birds-eye view of the flight path. For the first few moments after touchdown, passengers like me was busy taking photos of the exquisite airport with the intricate carvings and paintings.
